The Oura Ring: Our Favorite Wearable Health Tracker

A favorite of Altha Founder & Chief Healing Officer, Letizia, the Oura Ring is the most advanced and most accurate smart ring on the market. Designed to focus on sleep tracking, the Oura Ring provides in-depth analysis about your deep sleep, light sleep, REM sleep, blood oxygen levels, resting heart rate, sleep efficiency, and more. By using this information to make minor adjustments to your daily routine, you can improve your sleep and therefore transform your waking life as well.

How Does the Oura Ring Work?

Using data that has been validated against the gold standard sleep laboratory test (PSG), the Oura Ring uses mini sensors on the inside of the ring to measure heart rate, respiration, and heart rate variability 50 times per second (an extremely high sampling rate compared to other devices).

Why a Ring as Opposed to Wrist Band?

The ring measures directly from the arteries located in your finger, which allows it to capture the signals as soon as they leave the heart as opposed to wristbands that capture the signals on a delay on the return to the heart. The ring design is also unique in that the sensors are located on both sides of the finger and the technology prioritizes the clearest signal, unlike wrist wearables. Finally, because it is located on your finger, the highly sensitive accelerometer can detect the differences between turning over in bed, twitching in a dream, or getting up for a midnight bathroom break.

The 3 Oura Scores

The Oura Ring reports three main scores each day: Sleep, Readiness, and Activity. Here is an outline of each:

  • SLEEP: As previously mentioned, Oura provides in-depth analysis about the quality of your sleep (on a 1-100 score). This score is based on how long you slept in various sleep stages as well as signals from your body like heart rate and temperature. Oura also learns about your unique sleep patterns and over time provides suggestions on how you can optimize your sleep.

  • ACTIVITY: Using automatic activity detection, Oura tracks your movement, heart rate, steps, and recovery – whether you are cleaning the house or doing a triathlon. Using their tracking technology, they can tell if you are giving your body enough recovery time, whether your workouts are impacting your sleep and readiness, and how you can better meet your fitness goals.

  • READINESS: Taking into account 20 different signals from your body such as heart rate variability, body temperature, and sleep, the Readiness score tells you when you should push yourself and when you should relax instead. For example, if you have a high Readiness score, that day may be the day to choose to run that extra mile. If your readiness score is low, you should focus on rest and recovery. This score can also detect the early signs of getting sick – sometimes even before you get symptoms.

In addition to the above scores, Oura can also track your menstrual cycle, will tell you if you are in dire need of rest with “Rest Mode”, track your naps, and monitor your blood oxygen levels. They now also offer guided audio wellness sessions – all meticulously tracked of course.
